Water systems are increasing the use of real time monitoring for three major end uses: Compliance with a handful of drinking water regulations; process control; and potential detection of contamination.  This presentation will summarize the historical and current use of real time monitoring for each of these end uses. Below are examples of some issues that will be discussed for each end use:  1) Compliance � acceptance by state and federal regulatory agencies, 2) Process control � evaluation of new monitoring technologies, and 3) Contamination � the ability to detect a range of contaminants in a timely manner.  The potential impacts of future federal drinking water regulations on the need for on-lime monitoring will be also discussed.
