It has been found that triphenylphosphine oxide is a good catalyst for a variety of reduction reactions involving trichlorosilane as the stoichiometric reductant. In some cases triphenylphosphine oxide can be generated as a by-product in the synthesis of the reduction substrates, thereby allowing for one-pot reaction cascades that produce relatively complex final products from a combination of simple building blocks. This strategy has been applied to reductive aldol reactions, secondary and tertiary amine synthesis, and the selective alpha-beta reduction of conjugated polyunsaturated ketones. Details of this research will be presented.
