A unique reaction system has been designed to implement high backpressure into specially designed flow-tube reactors that, in the presence of microwave irradiation, can achieve very high temperatures (up to 1000 degrees Celsius). This leads to rapid reaction completion over a range of high transition state reactions and examples including the Diels-Alder, benzamidazole synthesis, and Claisen rearrangement will be presented. Further, development is under way of in-line reaction work up (e.g., counter-current liquid-liquid extraction) and in-line analysis (e.g., NMR spectroscopy, GCMS, LCMS, etc.) for both on-going chemical-process optimization and constant quality control for continuous manufacturing. Finally, advances in automated, hands-free, rational process optimization and monitoring will be discussed.
