BODIPY dyes are a useful class of versatile fluorescent probes that have found numerous diverse applications in various fields of chemistry and biology. From the structural stand point, the nature and position of substituents on the BODIPY skeleton can influence the spectral properties of these dyes. From the synthetic point of view, however, access to BODIPY dyes as well as to their structurally diverse congeners requires further improvements. Towards this end, we have developed novel mechanochemical approaches that allowed for facile preparation of both symmetric and non-symmetric BODIPY dyes. Furthermore, functionalization of specifically modified BODIPY dyes using click chemistry approaches, including metal-catalyzed triazole and isoxazole formations as well as thiol-yne/ene chemistry have also been investigated. In addition, expedient microwave synthesis of aza-BODIPY dyes has been developed. Synthetic details and the applications of these click- and aza-BODIPY dyes in regard to recognition and interaction with native and aggregated forms of various biomacromolecules will be described.
