This presentation will discuss the role of water in enabling or suppressing thermal and photochemical reactions of oxidized organic species (acids, alcohols, aldehydes and ketones) relevant to the atmospheric chemistry of/on atmospheric aerosols. Spectroscopic studies provide structural and dynamical information for the water and photon mediated chemistry while theoretical studies including significant contributions from the Gerber group, elucidates the roles of water vapor, of water cluster conformation and dynamical effects in these aqueous processes. Examples will include organic and inorganic acids important in the contemporary and on ancient Earth as well as other planetary systems. The implications of water-mediated chemistry to the nucleation, growth and the atmospheric processing of secondary organic aerosols will be discussed.
