The need for more sustainable materials and building blocks, as well as green chemistry tools to produce, modify and process them, are raising considerable efforts world-wide. Many attempts are made to replace, or at least increase, the amount of renewable raw materials in a given product on the expense of petroleum derived polymers, thereby hoping to gain competitiveness with products with a better carbon dioxide footprint.My research focuses on the design of green materials by building-in a controlled behavior into materials aimed at tissue engineering or sustainable commodity applications. A range of pathways have been used to synthesize polymers with various architectures. Strategies for the design of materials with controllable degradability and inherent material properties will be described.
