Fortunately, research doesn't happen in a vacuum.  At all academic institutions, particularly PUIs, many responsibilities compete for our time and attention. Teaching, research and service are integral parts of our professional portfolio and we all have rich lives beyond the institution.  Keeping these activities in equilibrium takes strategic planning.  This presentation will highlight mechanisms for bringing resources and students to the table in ways that move your research agenda forward while being cognizant of and allowing time for your other responsibilities.  Ways to balance being open to the serendipitous opportunities that come your way as part of the PUI community without becoming overwhelmed will be discussed.  Hints about how to weigh the value of particular opportunities in your institutional context and interpreting what types of professional development those provide are also included.  It is all about finding synergistic links between your research agenda and your other activities.
