Despite compelling advantages, scattering techniques using short-wave infrared (SWIR) excitation are often overlooked due to experimental constraints.  A nonlinear, surface-enhanced scattering technique is used as a novel approach to circumvent many of the existing challenges. Using excitation wavelengths between 1.5 and 1.8 �m, surface-enhanced hyper-Raman scattering (SEHRS) spectra from three different analyte molecules are obtained.  These spectra exhibit excellent signal-to-noise ratios and are accomplished with modest laser powers (2 mW, 1.55 �m) and short acquisition times (120 s).  Spectra taken at 1.8 �m indicate that the detection system is the limiting factor for sensing in this region and not the weakness of the hyper-Raman scattering effect.
