Silicon photonic microring resonators are a newly established platform for sensitive, multiplexed (128 sensors/chip), label-free, and real time detection of biomolecular binding.  Recently, our group has shown the ability of silicon photonic microring resonators to quantitatively detect DNA, miRNA, mRNA, and proteins .  These biosensors are capable of having a significant impact on science and medicine, especially in a clinical setting, due to the inherent efficiency, cost (<$1/assay), and scalability of each trial.Here we present a novel microring chip functionalization protocol which will decrease analysis time and complexity by replacing covalent linkage between the capture strand and sensor surface with electrostatic interactions. Ultimately, this will be applied to detect asymmetric PCR products to quantitate the expression levels of multiple mRNA (30+) relevant to glioblastoma multiforme, a lethal brain tumor.
