Zinc finger proteins can fulfill a wide variety of functions on the cellular level, including performing a specific role in the life cycle of retroviruses. Zinc-finger Antiviral Protein (ZAP) has been shown to exhibit antiviral activity. Previous research has shown that ZAP can dramatically inhibit retroviral infection. Research on the mechanism of inhibition would provide insights into the vulnerabilities of the retroviral life cycle. Although there are several anti-viral drugs are available that will allow the inhibition of retroviruses, none are entirely effective. Further research of ZAP could potentially lead to alternative anti-viral medication. We expressed and purified a ZAP fusion protein with the hopes of producing a purified ZAP sample for structural and thermostability analyses.
