Pyruvaldehyde was reacted with seven different thiosemicarbazide compounds to give a series of seven bis(thiosemicarbazone) compounds. One of these compounds, pyruvaldehyde bis(methylthiosemicarbazone), is also known as PTSM in the literature and is used as a ligand with copper radioisotopes in preparation of brain imaging agents for nuclear medicine procedures. The seven compounds produced are: pyruvaldehyde bis(TSC), pyruvaldehyde bis(MTSC), pyruvaldehyde bis(ETSC), pyruvaldehyde bis(tBTSC), pyruvaldehyde bis(BzTSC), pyruvaldehyde bis(PTSC), and pyruvaldehyde bis(dMTSC). The seven ligands were reacted with copper (II) chloride to form a series of square planar copper complexes. The ligands have also been reacted with potassium tetrachloropalladate (II) to form a series of analogous square planar palladium complexes. Even though there is much information in the literature about the Cu(PTSM) complex there is little information about the anti-microbial properties. So, the completely different antimicrobial activity of the thiosemicarbazone ligands and the copper metal complexes have been tested by determining the minimum inhibitory concentrations against four bacteria (Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa), two yeast (Candida albicans and Saccharomyces cerevisiae), and one mold (Aspergillus niger ).
