The �Special Topics in Inorganic Chemistry� course at The University of Georgia is formally part of the undergraduate �Writing Intensive Program.� This partnership serves to emphasize the importance of effective communication skills, especially clear and persuasive writing, to our chemistry majors. It also provides a valuable opportunity to explore topics often not included in the curriculum, such as the philosophical aspects of what the field of chemistry encompasses, the realities of how chemical innovation actually happens, and the varying ways to communicate chemical information. In this contribution, we describe how these concepts have been implemented within the framework of a �Special Topics in Inorganic Chemistry� course, and we provide qualitative data on the effectiveness of this approach.
