Metallic magnesium exhibits many promising properties for anode materials.1 However, the development of Mg-batteries is a technically challenging issue owing to the difficulty in migration of bivalent Mg ions via both of the solid-electrolyte interface and the solid phase. Thus, in contrast to the Li-battery system, Mg electrodes can only behave reversibly under passivation free conditions. Since the early nineties it has been known that certain ethereal Grignard reagents (RMgX, R = organic alkyl/aryl group and X = Cl-/Br-) are electrically conductive with Mg deposition/dissolution.2However, Grignard reagents are usually strong reducing agents with insufficient anodic stabilities. To be suitable for an Mg-battery application, the oxidation and irreversibility issues need to be overcome. In this regard, we have pursued the following: (1) gaining a deep understanding of the chemical equilibrium of the Grignard reagent, the Mg-deposition/-dissolution process, and the oxidation process of the Mg-electrolytes using �model chemistry� based on ab-initio calculations, (2) screening candidate salts and solvents from the theoretical background, and (3) developing new Mg-electrolytes with high oxidation stability and cycle efficiency. We introduce our combined theoretical and experimental strategy towards developing Mg-battery electrolytes (Fig1) and a developed new electrolyte system having high oxidation potential in 3.3 V vs. Mg and efficiency.
