The reactions of a tri-functional (vanillin-hydrazone-oxime) ligand (L) with lanthanide (Ln) salts result in the formation of a variety of different products, depending on the reaction conditions. Reactions of LnX3 (X = NO3 or Cl) with L in the presence of triethylamine (TEA) and trimethylacetic acid ((CH3)3CCO2H) form dinuclear complexes, [Tb2L2{(CH3)3CCO2}2(NO3)2] (1), [Tm2L2{(CH3)3CCO2}2 (H2O)2] (2), tetranuclear complexes, [Eu4L4{(CH3)3CCO2}4(H2O)2(CH3OH)2] (3), [Gd4L4{(CH3)3CCO2}4(H2O)2(CH3OH)2] (4), and a heptanuclear complex, [Dy7L7{(CH3)3CCO2}6(H2O)5] (5). Reactions of Ho(NO3)3 with L in the presence of TEA and benzoic acid (C6H5CO2H) or acetic acid (CH3CO2H) form a dinuclear complex [Ho2L2(C6H5CO2)(NO3)2] (6) and a hexanuclear complex [Ho6L6(O)(CH3CO2)6] (7) respectively. The reaction of Tb(NO3)3 with L in the presence of TEA and sodium azide (NaN3) forms a tetranuclear complex [Tb4L4(N3)4] (8). The x-ray crystal structures, spectroscopic, and magnetic properties of these complexes will be reported.
