The Distributed Drug Discovery program developed at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) enables students to synthesize drug molecule analogs in the course of learning laboratory techniques. The program is designed on an open source collaborative model to allow small groups in diverse locations to design, synthesize, and test potential drug leads targeted toward tropical diseases that are neglected by market-driven pharmaceutical firms. In response to two anti-malarial assay hits, our team at Abilene Christian University has synthesized several unnatural amino acid analogs using resin-based combinatorial chemistry.  After analytical characterization, these compounds will be sent to another location for anti-malarial assay.  The activity data will be used to design and synthesize additional analogs.
