Carbazole can be assembled into conjugated materials with potentially three different connectivities: carbazole-2,7-diyl, carbazole-3,6-diyl, and carbazole-2,6-diyl. The electronic properties of carbazole dimers prepared from these connectivities should be different since the nitrogen is in the conjugation for carbazole-3,6-diyl and out of conjugation for the carbazole-2,7-diyl. Carbazole-2,6-diyl is cross-conjugated across the ring system. The vertical excitation energies of carbazole dimers containing various connectivities were predicted computationally using the B3LYP functional with a 6-31G* basis set. The excitation energies ranged from 3.10 eV for the 2,7-3,6-heterodimer to 3.36 eV for the 2,6-2,6-homodimer. The synthesis of the dimers and computational properties of longer oligomers are being investigated.
