Dimeric calix[4]arene-capped azobenzene (CCA) is a supramolecular host with the ability to controllably capture and release cationic guest species through trans?cis photoisomerization in the presence of UV light. Host-guest binding studies have been underway for this system, but CCA has limited solubility in most polar organic solvents. This incompatibility between the solubility of the nonpolar host and cationic guest has made it difficult (and in some cases impossible) to evaluate the binding between the two species. Therefore, we have designed a functionalized analog of CCA that will contain polar solubilizing groups along the lower rim of each calixarene subunit. Progress has been made in preparing the key precursors leading to this material that should retain the host-guest activity of CCA while being more soluble in polar organic solvents.
