Heterocyclic aromatic aldehydes can undergo nucleophillic attack by amines to form Schiff base imines. To get imide product, reactants can be refluxed in toluene using a Hickman still, they can be simply ground together in a mortar, or they can be mixed and melted. We have synthesized a variety of imines using mono- and di-thiophenecarboxaldehydes and simple amines. Imine products were characterized using 1-H and 13-C NMR, XRD, FTIR and UV-vis.
