[2+2] Photocycloaddition reactions have been explored in great detail. Photocatalytic methods, however, particularly for ortho-cycloaddition of alkenes to arenes, have not. Photoredox catalysts have until recently been used sporadically in organic synthesis. We report here our use of Ru(bpy)2Cl2 to facilitate the intramolecular addition of pendant alkenes to acetophenones. In this study we also compared the efficiency of carrying out these reactions using both flow and batch photoreactors.
