A new method has been identified for diarylacetic acid synthesis using glyoxylic acid and acetic acid. Existing methodologies were found to be limited by a large excess of reagents and nonreproducable yields. Advantages of the present protocol include straightforward operation, heterogeneous catalysis, and simple work-up procedures. The reaction was optimized with anisole and was found to be amenable to a variety of electron-rich arenes, such as dimethoxybenzene, by adjustment of reaction parameters and purification methods. Products and their isomers were identified based on 1H NMR. Future work will seek to expand the scope of this reaction with other aromatic species.
