Among the three insertion-compound cathode systems (layered, spinel, and olivine) being pursued for lithium-ion batteries, the 2-dimensional layered oxides offer the highest capacity. For example, although the initially used layered LiCoO2 is limited in the practical capacity to ~ 140 mAh/g, the more recently pursued lithium-rich layered oxides offer capacities up to 300 mAh/g. This presentation will focus on the historical development, present status, and future prospects of the layered oxide cathodes. Along the way, the chemical and structural richness and complexities of the layered oxide cathodes will be particularly emphasized. Also, the challenges in utilizing capacities > 200 mAh/g with the layered oxides in practical cells will be presented. In this regard, some approaches to overcome the rate capability and voltage decay of the recently pursued lithium-rich layered oxides will be pointed out.
