Syngas derived from biomass gasification can be used for production of hydrocarbon- fuels, chemicals and power. However, unprocessed syngas cannot be used directly because it contains unacceptably high concentration of mono to multiple aromatic compounds known as tar. Syngas tar can cause many problems such as condensation and choking and thus needs to be removed. The objective of this paper was to study reforming performance of char-supported nickel catalysts using naphthalene and anthracene as model tar compounds. Char-based catalyst is promisingly because it is cost-effective alternative for other catalysts such as Ni/Al catalyst for tar removal. Since real tar is a complex mixture composed by hundreds of organic compounds, model tar compounds are preferred. Naphthalene and anthracene are used as model tar compounds because these high molecular weight compounds are most difficult to crack but have not been studied extensively. The results will show conversion rates, reaction kinetics and optimum conditions of naphthalene and anthracene reforming with the char-based catalyst.
