TiO2 has proven to be the most promising photocatalyst for environmental pollution removal. Normally, TiO2 nanoparticles are put into the water to photodecompose the aqueous pollutants under sunlight. The photocatalytic decomposition process includes surface adsorption and photodecomposition. Here we demonstrate that the surface adsorption and the photodecompositon can be independently separated with TiO2 nanoparticles. So we can use TiO2 nanoparticles to first adsorb aqueous pollutants, and then photodecompose them. This would expand the practical application of TiO2 nanophotocatalyst to avoid the loss of the photocatalysts as they can be coated on other substrates as adsorbents and regenerated by sunlight.
