This presentation will describe recent advances in C-H functionalization by metal carbenes.  The emphasis will be on intermolecular C-H functionalization with substrates lacking obvious directing groups. Unlike the more conventional metal-catalyzed methods for C-H functionalization, these reactions proceed by inserting a carbene into the C-H bond rather than an initial insertion of a metal center into the C-H bond. This presentation will emphasize the influences of the catalyst and the type of carbene used on controlling both the site-selectivity and stereoselectivity of these C-H functionalizations.
