Over the years, the author of this paper has watched what was once described as the largest �Department of Education� in the U.S. evolve into a School of Education and then a College of Education at Purdue University. At times he has participated in the periodic National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) reviews of the teacher education at Purdue and at other times he has served as an interested observer of this process. In the course of this talk, he will speculate on why the Department of Chemistry at Purdue devoted resources to hiring a faculty member to supervise the preparation of pre-service chemistry teachers 50 years ago; why pre-service chemistry teachers have graduated from the Department of Chemistry (not the College of Education) for at least 50 years; the reaction of NCATE review teams to this rather unusual structure of pre-service teacher training; the structure of the existing program; and the effect it has had on the chemistry teachers who graduate from this program.
