Various photocatalytic systems have been reported to be capable of converting CO2 in CO and/or hydrocarbon products. This lecture will address the spectroscopic evaluation of these systems, and how the information can be used to arrive at improved catalyst materials. In particular two different catalyst systems will be addressed, one operative in the gas phase, and one in carbonated water. The first is the currently still best performing system based on mesoporous silica supported isolated titania sites. The creation of visible light sensitive Chromium to Titanium charge transfer complexes will be discussed, including evaluation of back reactions (hydrocarbons to CO2). We will demonstrate high rates in back-reactions and different pathways of reaction intermediates (formaldehyde) to be very relevant in determining overall performance of Cr modified Ti sites. DRIFT studies are very illustrative to analyse these differences. The second catalyst system to be discussed is graphitic C3N4. Interaction of aqueous CO2 with this promising material has been studied by ATR infrared spectroscopy. The sorption of CO2 will be reported, as well as spectral observations during illumination. The spectroscopic data will be used to discuss the future potential of C3N4 in converting CO2 photocatalytically.
