Glycolysis is a universal pathway to break down sugars to pyruvate. However, the conversion of pyruvate to acetyl-CoA, a precursor to biofuels, leads to carbon dioxide loss. This inefficiency severely limits the theoretical carbon yield towards biofuel production. By implementing a synthetic pathway termed Non-Oxidative Glycolysis (NOG) we are able to reach 100% carbon conversion by avoiding any CO2 loss. NOG can be an extremely useful platform in the production of acetyl-CoA derived products.
