Acetylpyrazine thiosemicarbazone (APZ-TSC)ligands, which are Triapine� analogues, have been implicated asribonucleotide reductase inhibitors and may act as potential anti-canceragents. During the last three years of my undergraduate work, we have synthesizedand characterized by NMR spectrometry, seven of these APZ-TSC compounds in ourlaboratory. We have shown that these compounds ligate Cu(II), Pd(II) and Pt(II)as mono-anionic tridentate ligands, to give square planar complexes. We believethat these metal compounds act as Topoisomerase IIa inhibitors at lowconcentrations. All of the ligands and metal complexes were tested forantimicrobial activity by determining the minimum inhibitory concentrationsagainst four bacteria (Bacillus subtilis,Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa), two yeast (Candida albicans and Saccharomycescervisiae), and one mold (Aspergillusniger). This presentation will show the culmination of this undergraduateresearch project.
