Flavins are naturally occurring organic catalysts that perform oxidation-reduction reactions of biological metabolites in a mild, efficient manner. By using synthetic flavin catalysts, new, green pathways to perform oxidation-reduction reactions can be achieved without the use of high temperatures, chlorinated solvents, costly oxidants, or metal catalysts. Many examples of such reactions have already been reported, including Dakin oxidations, the oxidation of sulfides and amines, and the oxidation of Hantzsch esters. Although flavin can act upon a wide array of substrates independently, using a co-catalyst can enhance the efficiency of the flavin by reducing catalyst complexity. It has been previously shown that enal epoxidations of a,�-unsaturated aldehydes can be achieved by using a prolinol co-catalyst in conjunction with a flavin catalyst. Currently, the scope of flavin as a co-catalyst is being extended to enal epoxidations of other carbogenic substrates, as well as, other oxidation reactions, such as Baeyer-Villiger oxidations.
