Statistical analysis of data and the presence of a statistical difference is often the evidence used to justify a claim about the efficacy of new teaching pedagogies or other instructional interventions. Chemistry education researchers have many, relatively easy to use, software packages that can be used to carry out these analyses. What these software packages cannot do is determine the type of analysis that is appropriate. The decision about the type of analysis to be done is intimately tied to the design of the study. The analysis often involves comparing the scores of two or more groups on some measure. Exactly how this comparison is done and the choice of the specific statistical test used is the focus of this presentation. It is not the goal of this presentation to provide a step-by-step method for doing these analyses; instead the goal is to illustrate the fundamental concepts behind the ANOVA techniques and the types of designs that lend themselves to these techniques.
