We all do our research in the real world, but some worlds are messier than others.  Gathering data on instructional interventions while those interventions are in progress brings both joys and challenges to a researcher's life. This talk will discuss some of the problems that can arise in the course of a research project that requires gathering student data in real time, particularly if the project spans multiple institutions or has longitudinal aims.  Strategies for dealing with several of these problems will be presented, as will suggestions for handling tensions between what a researcher might want to do and what a researcher will ultimately be able to do in a given study setting.
