CO2 adsorption of Cu3(btc)2 (btc=1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate) Metal Organic Framework (MOF) thin films are studied for potential applications as membranes for gas separation. Homogeneous thin films with a preferential orientation (dependent on surface functionalization) are prepared in a liquid phase quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) system using the layer by layer method. These substrates are then placed into a vacuum chamber in a gas phase QCM system, activated, and CO2 uptake measured. CO2 uptake of preferentially oriented thin films is lower than that of the bulk powder. By inducing defects into the films via ligand exchange a surprising two fold increase in CO2 uptake is observed. This talk will provide details on parameters affecting CO2 adsorption in thin films that may shed light onto adsorption in bulk MOFs.
