Under the auspices of the Center for Enabling New Technologies through Catalysis (CENTC), an NSF-funded Phase II CCI, a new collaboration between research chemists and their students at The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) and the Liberty Science Center (LSC) was initiated in 2012. The primary goal of the partnership was to facilitate the design and construction of an interactive exhibit that would offer educational content aimed at teaching LSC visitors about the wide variety of consumer products that are derived (in part or whole) from fossil fuels. The result � a highly popular, interactive touch table � is now part of a larger exhibit that focuses on energy, fossil fuels, climate change, and environmental impact. During project development, chemistry students at TCNJ performed extensive background research on the chemistry of consumer products, thereby learning about raw materials, manufacturing, and environmental impact. Through the collaborative framework of this project, the impact of student service to the community has been greatly magnified through exposure at the LSC; young scientists and their families now have an open opportunity to learn about chemistry and fossil fuels in a fun and user-friendly setting.
