Sulphation of zirconia deposited on SBA-15 (mesoporous silica) enhances twenty times the productivity in the catalytic etherification of HFM with ethanol due to the creation of strong Lewis acid sites together with Br�nsted acidity, while selectivity to 5-(ethoxymethyl)furan-2-carbaldehyde (EMF, a performing biodiesel additive) and to ethyl 4-oxopentanoate (EOP, an intermediate to valeric esters) depends not only on the acidity, but also on the localization of zirconia nanoparticles inside the mesoporous silica.
