Ethyl tert-butyl ether and tert-amyl methyl ether are two widely used oxygenated fuel additives, specifically as an alternative to methyl tert-butyl ether, because of their favorable physical characteristics. As a part of a continuing effort to characterize noteworthy combustion reaction intermediates and products, we present recent results from experiments carried out at the Advanced Light Source at the Chemical Dynamics Beamline of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory using multiplexed photoionization mass spectrometry. Species are identified by their mass-to-charge ratios, kinetic profile, and photoionization curve. Comparison of experimental spectra with literature plots or calculated ones is routinely done to assure the identity of a given species. The experimental findings are discussed and possible reaction schematics are presented for the two systems.
