In the present work, a simple and efficient method, vortex-assisted micro-solid-phase extraction (VA-�-SPE) was developed for the determination of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) from environmental water samples followed by analysis with gas chromatography�mass spectrometry (GC�MS).In the VA-�-SPE procedure, a prepared �-SPE device which contains graphite fiber as sorbent in a bag made of porous polypropylene hollow fiber membrane whose edges were heat-sealed was conditioned and placed in a glass vial with 20 mL of water sample. Then the glass vial was capped and vigorously shaken on a vortex agitator for 6 min. With the assistance of vortex, the extraction and preconcentration of analytes by �-SPE were faster than conventional �-SPE (6 min compared to 30 min) which was assisted by agitation. After extraction, the �-SPE device was removed from sample solution, rinsed with ultrapure water, dried with lint free tissue, and placed in a glass inser. The analytes concentrated on graphite fiber could be directly desorbed by an organic solvent using sonication, and determined by a GC-MS system.Six PCBs were selected here as model compounds for developing and evaluating the method. Some key parameters for VA-�-SPE, such as sorbent type for �-SPE, vortex time, addition of salt, desorption solvent and time were investigated. Under the most favorable conditions, the method shows good limits of detection (as low as 0.012 �g/L) and repeatability of extractions (RSD below 9.6%, n=5). The proposed method provides an interesting and convenient approach for fast sample preparation method. VA-�-SPE was demonstrated to be a simple and efficient method for the determination of PCBs from environmental water samples.
