In the present work, a novel microextraction method, vortex-assisted emulsification microextraction (VA-EME) combined with votex-assisted micro-solid-phase extraction (VA-�-SPE) was developed and applied for the determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from environmental water samples followed by analysis with gas chromatography�mass spectrometry (GC�MS).In the VA-EME procedure, 20 uL of 1-octanol (extraction solvent) was injected into a 20 mL of sample solution placed in a vial. Then the vial was capped and vigorously shaken on a vortex agitator for 2 min to form an emulsion. Subsequently, a prepared �-SPE device which contains multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) as sorbent in a bag made of porous polypropylene hollow fiber membrane whose edges were heat-sealed was placed in the emulsion. The vortex was enabled for another 6 min. After extraction, the �-SPE device was removed and placed in a small glass vial for solvent desorption by sonication. One microliter of the extract was directly injected into a GC-MS system for analysis.In this procedure, six PAHs were selected here as model compounds for developing and evaluating the method. Some important parameters affecting the extraction, such as the type and volume of extraction solvent, the sorbent type for �-SPE, vortex time, the desorption solvent and time were investigated. Under the most favorable conditions, the method shows good limits of detection (as low as 0.011 �g/L) and repeatability of extractions (RSD below 6.9%, n=5). The proposed method provides an convenient approach for fast sample preparation, and was demonstrated to be a time-saving and highly efficient method for the determination of PAHs from water samples.Keywords: Vortex-assisted emulsification microextraction (VA-EME), vortex-assisted micro-solid phase extraction (VA-�-SPE), Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)
