Ion selective electrodes (ISEs) that contain the lanthanide metal Erbium(III) as a metalloporphyrin demonstrate selectivity towards anions such as benzoate, salicylate and acetate  that contain a carboxylate anion group.  For this work, Holmium (III) and Ytterbium (III) tetrphenylporphyrin-based ISEs are examined for the first time.  Both of these new elements are lanthanides near Erbium on the periodic table and in the same oxidation state as Erbium. These ISEs are created by incorporating the lanthanide metalloporphyrins as ionophores into highly plasticized polyvinyl chloride (PVC) membranes with carefully controlled amounts of ionic additives (either cationic or anionic). The initial research includes testing towards a wide variety of commonly used anions and cations to determine selectivity patterns and coefficients in the same manner as previous preliminary ISE research. More in-depth studies are then used to construct calibration curves of any ions with high affinity for the electrodes.
