Alkyl and aryl groups are ubiquitous in ligand and catalysts design. Here we will discuss an alternative and arguably superior class of ligand substituents, namely carba-closo-dodecaborate anions. Appending phosphine ligands with such sterically demanding and weakly coordinating carborane clusters, allows access to a variety of unprecedented architectutres for catalysis. Single component zwitterionic complexes for hydroaddition and olefin polymerization, supported by such phosphines, will be will be described.
