Restricted access media is a column packing material that features a size exclusion external surface in combination with chromatographically retentive pores.  When biological fluid samples are injected, proteins are excluded from the pores, and small molecules of interest are retained.  The retained compounds can then be eluted to an analytical column to facilitate on-line trap-and-elute analysis.  We have worked to develop restricted access media methods to measure estrogens at parts-per-trillion level detection limits from cerebrospinal fluid and plasma samples.  Signficiant effort has been given to dealing with small sample volumes and using bulk derivatization protocols to eliminate off-line sample preparation and improve detection limits.
