Fundamental challenges in designing functional photoactive molecules and molecular materials, e.g., for organic photovoltaics or molecular photocatalysis, include: (i) achieving high absorbance in a broad spectral range and (ii) generating energetically and spatially well defined long-lived charge separated states. Hierarchically structured coordination oligomers based on terpyridine units connected via a conjugated bridge coordinated to transition metal centers may meet these requirements.In this work building blocks for such materials (mono and dinuclear terpyridine complexes) are characterized by resonance Raman[1] and time-resolved transient absorption and emission spectroscopy.[2-4] Especially, by temperature-dependent experiments equilibria between MLCT and LC states in the metal-tpy-bridge-tpy(-metal) assemblies can be observed and barriers involved in the energy and electron transfer cascade can be quantified. These properties and their variation upon exchanging the coordinated metal ions and ligand structures will be used to establish structure-function-relationships, which will be exploited for the future design of oligomeric electron and energy transfer assemblies.This work was financially supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (grant DI1517-3/1).References:[1] M.
