The present study aims to a better understanding of complex polymer-based nanocomposite, where the polymeric matrix has specific physical properties (ferroelectric, piezoelectric, and pyroelectric features) and the nanofiller consists of magnetic nanoparticles. The research focuses on the spectroscopic modifications in such nanocomposites, as noticed from Wide Angle X-Ray scattering and Raman spectroscopy. The polymeric matrix, polyvinylidene fluoride, has a rich morphology that includes up to 5 crystalline phases. The nanofiller consists on nanoparticles of Fe3O4. The nanocomposites were obtained by melt mixing, using a Polylab extruder with counterrotating screws. The as obtained nanocomposites have been investigated by Raman spectroscopy using a Bruker Sentera confocal microscope Raman with the laser diode emitting a 785 nm and the Wide Angle X-Ray Spectra (WAXS) have been obtained by using a Bruker Discovery - 8 spectrometer. The effect of the nanofiller on the resonance line parameters (position, width, and intensity) for both Raman and WAXS measurements have been investigated in detail. WAXS lines have been accurately fitted by Lorentzians while the shape of Raman lines was simulated by a BWF line shape function. The fitting suggested small deviations from a Gaussian like resonance for all Raman lines studied. The WAXS data indicates that the stress transfer from the nanofiller towards the polymeric matrix is weak, suggesting negligible interactions between filler and macromolecular chains. Raman spectroscopy supports these findings. Additional thermal methods (TGA, DSC, and DMA) are scheduled in order to fully understand the physical and chemical properties of these nanocomposites.
