Bacterial nanocellulose (BC) has been used in a variety of applications including composite reinforcement, medical textiles, cosmetics and food stuff. BC is a natural hydrogel with excellent network and mechanical properties, it is nontoxic and biocompatible. Its excellent affinity with connective tissue facilitates its use in several medical applications. Currently, several applications involve use as matrix for cell growth and tissue development, in the treatment of wounds and burns, replacement of veins and arteries, among others. Here we propose the combination of BC with wheat germ extract (Triticum vulgare) as auxiliary additive, to propel epithelialization and healing processes. This composite biomaterial is expected to perform relatively better in wound dressing and as an environment for protection and treatment as well to reduce healing time and cost while improving the patient's wellbeing. The availability of these materials and potential use in Colombian's health system is very attractive. To this end, BC membranes produced from agroindustrial wastes by Gluconacetobacter medellinensis were loaded with wheat germ extract and characterized for their potential application. The main techniques used included scanning electron microscopy (SEM), infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), tensile tests, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and different tests to determine their antioxidant capability, antimicrobial properties, gas permeability, toxicity, genotoxicity and biocompatibility. A summary of main results is presented in this contribution.
