Use of Clickers is a very effective way to assess student learning in large classrooms. Students are excited to test what they just learned and receive immediate feedback from the professor.  The professor also receives immediate feedback on student learning which can direct the further discussion on certain topics. Online homework is another way to effectively assess student learning. Online homework provides immediate feedback and unlimited attempts for students to complete the problems at their own pace. At the same time it will not burden the professor with grading. The professor can also check each student's homework if needed. Both techniques work very well for my organic chemistry classes with over 200 students.
