A revisioning of general education objectives leads to course design requirements that contrast with traditional content driven curriculum.  Working from a need-to-know perspective, scientific principles are developed and used to answer pertinent scientific questions, raised by students, in the execution of crafts that have driven the development of our society yet predtate science: blacksmithing, ceramics, brewing, and glassblowing.  The development goals, general curriculum, classroom activities, student assessment tools, and student outcomes will be discussed, and questions about the value and transferability of contextual learning for non-science students will be raised for discussion.
