Self-Assembled Monolayers (SAMs) are of particular interest to the field of nanotechnology due to their potential to allow for greater specificity in surface design and surface reactions. The purpose of this study is to synthesize and characterize thioether SAMs of varying length on Au (111). It has been hypothesized that thioether SAMs will assemble lateral to the surface and thus provide greater control over the assembly. Preliminary experiments involving the synthesis and characterization of dodecanethiol and octadecanethiol SAMs have been successful as evidenced by STM and Raman spectroscopy. STM topographic images of the Au samples propose the formation of thioether SAMs due to consistent deformations of the Au (111) structure caused by the physisorption of the thioether molecules on the Au surface. Furthermore, Raman spectra of the sample surfaces indicate the presence of C-S stretching (700 cm-1) as well as C-H stretching (2697 cm-1). These results suggest that thioether SAM formation was successful.
