The contrast in magnetic resonance imaging is determined by T1 and T2 relaxation times and the spin density of hydrogen nuclei. T1 and T2 relaxation times of protons in aqueous solutions can be altered by the presence of dissolved amino acids. Glutamic acid is an amino acid that is a metabolite found in the brain and could affect images of the brain. Relaxation times of the aqueous solutions of glutamic acid at various concentrations, pH, and conductivities will be measured. T1 relaxation times were measured using a standard inversion recovery pulse sequence. T2 relaxation times were measured using a spin echo pulse sequence. Insight into intermolecular interactions in the aqueous solutions can be gained by looking at changes in the relaxation times with these variables.
