A formal process of training students in the Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) was initiated at the University of Maryland by Sandra Greer.  While many of the departments at the University included 'ethics training' in their educational program for undergraduates, until the late 1980's there was no formal course focusing on topics in RCR until Sandra Greer (Chemistry and Chemical Engineering) along with her colleagues Robert Dooling (Psychology) and Arthur Popper (Biology) began teaching formal courses for graduate students in their respective programs.   Building on the foundation of this cadre, formal training in Responsible Conduct of Research is available at every level - entering freshmen, undergraduates, the Honors Program, graduate students, and there is even a formal workshop focused on university administrators.   I shall discuss the evolution of the RCR program at the University of Maryland and the lessons that we have learned as the program has expanded.
