In an attempt to gain finer control over natural product biosynthesis and eventual production, heterologous biosynthetic approaches have been applied that include using E. coli as a surrogate host.  Upon establishing production of a targeted natural product through this route, the engineering capabilities of the new host offer numerous opportunities for molecular diversification.  This presentation will feature strategies that include alteration of native E. coli metabolism, the introduction of new metabolism, and variation in the biosynthetic precursors required for compound formation.  In doing so, structural variants of the modular polyketide antibiotic erythromycin A have been generated.
