The development of fermentation technology is often highlighted in any historical review of production technologies for antibiotics and other natural product drugs.  However, the development of the many separation technologies that were necessary to make these products commercially viable must also be recognized.  This talk will review the key advances that facilitated the production of these important medicines, noting links to advances in synthetic drug development where appropriate.  The further evolution of these technologies for purification of biotechnology drugs will also be discussed.
